Winmail Viewer - Letter Opener App Reviews

85 Customer Reviews:

I often receive some strange winmail.dat files that couldn’t be read in my Apple mail, I feel very confused and couldn’t find way out, well, one friend introduce this app to me today, I think it is absolutely the easiest way to view and save, I feel relieved for now on when facing email attached with those complex winmail.dat format files.

Been using Letter Opener for years. I get a lot of email, and some of it contains attachments that can’t be opened on a Mac because they’re compressed by some arcane process in Windoze. When Letter Opener is working, these files are visible and useable. Works like a charm. No issues. The only time I miss it is when Apple changes Mail, so I have to update Letter Opener in order to see those files. I love software that is so well written that I don’t have to worry about it. Great job, guys.

Great app for fixing a stupid problem

It works. Consistently and perfectly. The problem it fixes, email attachments being converted to unreadable winmail.dat files, is ridiculous.

Simple as that. It works without any problems. Simply right click on the win mail file and select Letter Opener and it works. It solved a huge problem I was having with files I was receiving from PCs. And it was inexpensive!

Works great

My business email attachments are always in winmail.dat and this has made my life on a Mac much easier.

Why do they say it’s free when you have to pay $9.99 to use it. It may work but I will never know. They lost all credibility with me when they lied upfront!

Mike-oB · 10 years ago

they tell you it’s free, but all the free version does is tell you who the email is from etc. (all of which i could see in my email without this), so then you have to spend $9.99 on the ‘premium’ version to be able to open the file. it’s gets worse from there - then they tell you that you have to spend another $5 to be able to save or print it. most people would assume that a $10 ‘premium’ version would allow that. it seems that this is one of those programs that tries to constantly charge you around every corner

I used to cringe when I received an email from a Windows user with a winmail.dat file. Now I just drag it to Letter Opener (which I keep on my dock) and voila, I see what I need to see. Though I agree with other reviewers, my Mac OS should be able to detect the file and just open it.

It is not free it costs 9.99 - not sure if it works

The free version does not work. They ransom the file for $9.99 each time you convert a file. Do not recommend

Best thing about this app is that when I have a .dat file to open, I just click the file and the app automatically opens itself, and then opens the file. Otherwise, it just stays dormant on my macbook waiting for it to be called upon next time. I had a .dat file to open today and hadn’t had one come across my email in many months. I didn’t even remember the name of this app. But I double clicked the .dat file in my email, and it opened right up.

Terrific piece of software - it permits me to open all of the stuff sent to me by customers using Windoze. No flash, no advertisements - it just works when I need it.

not free, doesn’t open attachments

To open an attached file, it says I have to pay $9.99. Useless for me

It works

It works. Does what I need to do. No extra features

Absolutely shameful

This is not how application development should be like. Im appaled by this "freemium" model.

The CURRENT VERSION of this product is worthless. Sure, you can open it up and see the title of the file, but I don’t think that’s worth anything. Perhaps you need that. I don’t. I need to open the file. So this was a waste of time. If I would have known it does nothing for me unless I pay, I wouldn’t have installed it and tried it out. I know what these apps CAN do, which is why I was looking for a solution. I bet the paid version is worthy of 5 stars. The free version is worthless from what I can tell.

tr38back · 10 years ago

Thanks Atlan for creating this. It is only ½ a solution because calendar events cannot be automatically found by Mail and relayed to Calendar when they are in winmail.dat. Apple, shame on you for not having this built into Mail.

The info page on this app claims that with the free version you can read the text of a winmail.dat message. I do not find this to be true (and several other reviewers say that it isn’t true). Apparently it is nothing but a come-on for the “premium” version.

Life Saver!

I don’t need it often but when I do I am in a hurry, I just drag the win mail.dat onto the icon and it opens every time.
